We're BIG on sportWe're BIG on art

Year 4

Welcome to Year 4

We have helped Red Riding Hood choose the best insulation for her ice-cream to take to Grandma by testing various materials.  We have melted some really gooey fats and timed how long each one takes to melt.  We are waiting with anticipation for the weather to improve so that we can make shadow monsters to learn about light.

This term we have made batik patterns on silk, combining our India topic with art, and have displayed them proudly for all to see.  We have also made a clay diva and brightly decorated it to light at Diwali- the Hindu festival of light. Next term, we are looking at mosaics, clay tiles, weapons and other interesting Roman arty things, which are going to keep us really busy.

We have studied a differerent cultural setting and social group when exploring India and the village Chembakolli.  We will dress in Indian clothes as well, which will be really fun.  We have considered the similarities and differences between our lives here in England and that of Chembakolli in India, such as housing, clothing and family life. We will be visiting a Hindu Mandir soon.

The children are going to be getting an experience of Roman life-style through Art, Drama, ICT and visitors to the school, as we travel back to before and after Rome invaded England.  We are  going to learn about gladiators and weapons, food and clothing, and even the differences between the toilets now and then!  Can you imagine having a slave and being fed grapes like Julius Caesar or building a house with HUGE mosaic floors?

We have been creating a learning journal about India on the computer, learning how to insert hyperlinks into our work, and manipulating text and images.  We worked in pairs during this time, which helped us accept new ideas from our peers and help each other.

During P.E. we have been practising our gymnastics, athletics, and game skills. This is an on-going process, as there are a lot of things that need continual practice throughout the year. Next term we will be swimming, trying extremely hard to float at the beginning, then to swim using various strokes.

This year in PHSE we are focusing on ´Getting On With Others´ and "Self-Esteem".  We are going to be holding a lot of discussion groups which will help us to understand that everyone needs time for self-expression, and will be practising our listening skills, realising that we are all friends and are able to help our peers by ´lending an ear´.
